Summer Reading Goes to Charleston!

Thanks to the generosity of the Duke Energy Foundation, we received a surprise grant enabling us to take our readers to the SC Aquarium.  Each year, the Duke Energy Foundation donates $30 million in charitable grants to communities just like ours.  One of their efforts is to support child literacy programs.  Thank you, Duke Energy!

Summer Reading Kickoff at Lee State Park

Our first adventure was to Lee State Park with Ranger Laura Kirk for a scavenger hunt!  We began on the wetland boardwalk in search of all things nature.  From dragonflies to birds, there was no shortage of wildlife on our trek.  Our adventure continued to the pond where we were able to see aquatic life up close.  Children giggled and squealed with anticipation as Ranger Laura filled the containers with critters from both land and water.  Then, thanks to the artesian wells, we took some time to rehydrate and cool down from the heat.  After lunch, we ended our day roasting marshmallows over a fire.  Everyone had a good time, thanks to Ranger Laura.  She went above and beyond with the children and their parents to teach them about the exciting things to see right here at our very own Lee State Park. [...]  read more
